How to Size a Bike by Brandon Nobel

When you are getting your first bike or a new bike , it is important to know how to size a bike. Not every bike fits for every rider . To enjoy your riding advenuture you then need a correctedly fitted bike.

Knowing how to size a bike may be something you defer to the store expert but sometimes that expect is not there to advise - for example, buying from a large department store or over the internet.

If your bike is fitted for you, cycling will be more comfortable for you and you will be able to ride for longer. Over-sized bikes can be dangerous.They can prevent you grounding your feet causing balance problems.

Bikes look like a simple piece of equipment ,and the first step in sizing a bike is choosing the right frame. This is the main component of a bicycle. .It is the frame that all of the other parts join to in order to complete the bike. The modern and most common frame design for an upright bicycle is based on the safety bicycle, and consists of two triangles, a main triangle and a paired rear triangle. This is known as the diamond frame. (Wikipedia)The frame is one piece construction and is tubular not solid. There are some 9 variations in frame style.

As you learn about other parts you'll see why this is so. The more high tech the frame composition the greater the cost. So when comparing what looks like similar bikes,with a big price difference, the reason is the frames composition. Lighter and stronger generally mean carbon fibre and hence more expense.That said there is a frame to suit all needs and budgets.

Whilst there are a few different styles of bike, the most common ones are the mountain bike and the road bike.A mountain bike frame is different from a road bike frame and you need to test both before deciding on a bike. To get an idea of the right bike size, measure your inseam and your height and go online to find a bicycle frame size calculator. Online frame sizing guides often allow you to print out the specifications you have generated. Simply ,the right size is the right size and the frame size calculator does the job for you.

You have the option of using a woman's or a man's frame. Cycling is fun and a great form of exercise, but without the comfort that comes with correct sizing, the joy is somewhat diminished. So don't put aside trying a frame that's designed for the "opposite sex". The woman's frame has a crossbar that is slanted downward from front to back and the men's frame is usually relatively straight across. There are frames for women and men, but that does not mean you are pidgeon holed into staying with your genders frame. It comes down to comfort.If, for example as a male you have stiff knees and cant get onto a "male" frame, then try the ladies style. It is all a matter of your comfort.

Again, you want to be able to stand comfortably on the bike when you are at intersections and other stopping points—including when you are getting going on the bike at the beginning of your ride.

When you buy a mountain bike, for example ,you need to know that the frame size is ten to twelve centimetres smaller than a road bike. This allows for better manoeuvrability off road. The frame is the measurement of the seat tube (not the seat) to the centre of the bottom bracket. A frame calculator is a guide to size.But within those size parameters there are other factors to consider. Most importantly your final decision will come a after you have ridden the different options available. You need to sit on the bike and get a feel for how it fits you before you choose the bike you're going to get.

The frame size must be just right. There is nothing worse than being too cramped on a bike. You knees knock the handle bars, the bike is less balanced and its just plan awkward. An efficient and powerful pedal rotation requires a height where you are nearly able to extend your leg fully. This maximizes the power of the bike.
