Old Radio Shows Writer and Producer Arch Oboler by Mary Johnson

Born and raised from Chicago, Arch Oboler was well known for his script writing career in radio, and had many other aspects to his career in entertainment. His career covered a range of different entertainment styles, from his main focus on old time radio script writing, through to producing and directing, and even writing novels. Arch's career transcended across the growing range of media of the day, graduating from radio to film star and television star too. In 1909, Arch Oboler was born in Illinois' Chicago. From a young age, he started writing his very own radio scripts and selling them at high school. The first time he was widely noticed was when he wrote a script that had Don Ameche and Mae West portraying Adam and Eve with a somewhat suggestive twist.

Perhaps because the show aired on a Sunday or perhaps because of its light treatment of the Bible, many listeners were outraged. Old radio shows such as these caused quite an upset as a result. In fact, it caused Mae West to be banned from radio for many years. Times, perceptions and attitudes have of course changed considerably since then, but it was clearly controversial in the era in which it originally broadcast. When the fury died down, Oboler was offered the show 'Lights Out', a series that featured scary stories for the brave listener. In 1939 he was given the show 'Arch Oboler's Plays' where he continued to share horror stories across the air waves.

In addition to his radio work, Oboler appeared in many theatrical productions and in film. He starred in films such as Escape, On Our Merry Way, and Gangway for Tomorrow. He also directed films such as Bwana Devil and Twonky. During the 1940s, Oboler was an outspoken political activist. He incorporated this into his media career, writing many anti-nazi screenplays and scripts. In fact, his work was generally well received, and even attracted the likes of top flight Hollywood stars, who even offered to take on roles for scaled down pay.

Oboler also wrote the Broadway play 'Night of the Auk' and the novel 'House on Fire'. He had a penchant for science fiction and horror and he delivered all of his performances and writings with flair and finesse. While many would have commented his work as gory, that did not stop the general consensus from enjoying what he offered, and so he had millions of fans. At his peak, Arch Oboler and particularly his works, lasted a long time. His work was always done in a unique manner, which sometimes brought about inevitable controversy, since the time was relatively rife with social taboos. Over his expansive career, his work was incredibly popular, from the early 1930s onwards. Oboler's most famous of old time radio shows 'Lights Out' can still be heard in syndication on some old time radio stations. Oboler's work did outlive him and continues to be popular even after his death in March 1987. He is a giant in old time radio and fans continue to love the terrifying tales he spun.
