Why Cycle Helmets Are Important by Anna Greening

Recent studies have indicated that a considerable number of adolescents and adults continue to cycle without wearing cycle helmets or other protective headgear. Over 100.000 injuries a year could be prevented simply by people wearing a cycle helmet. Women, on the other hand, hate what has lovingly been called "helmet hair." Some arguments are even viewed by many people as valid such as the fact that vehicle drivers do not take the same care what someone wearing a helmet as with someone who is not.

Regardless of whether a helmet is worn for recreation or competition they can prevent serious injuries to the brain if fit properly and worn consistently. Anyone who has fallen from a bike understands the value of their use. Although quality gear can be expensive, any helmet worn which meets governmental mandates for safety will benefit the rider in the case of an unforeseen calamity.

Helmets can be uncomfortable on any day, hot on warm days, and leave hair unsightly on most days. However, when considering the option in case of an accident, it is well worth a little discomfort and unruly hair to protect the brain. Most helmets today are made with a polystyrene liner. This is a very hard material that contains tiny air pockets allowing it to be crushed in the event of an impact. The foam is designed to absorb the energy during a crash which lessens the impact on the skull.

To maximize results, knowing how to achieve a proper fit could help prevent injuries while helping the rider achieve the level of comfort desired. The first thing to look for is the level of stability. If hit in the head, the helmet should fit tightly enough to sustain the shock and stay put. Maximum coverage will be achieved by making certain it sets as low on the head as possible with the straps secured snugly enough to ensure the helmet remains level without causing undue pressure on the rider's windpipe.

The helmet should pull down just slightly, but still be comfortably and not block vision. Very little movement should occur with this test or when the head is shaken front-to-back or side-to-side. This stability is extremely important.

Wearing cycle helmets is not only required by law in most countries, but can also save lives. Like wearing a seatbelt it is a habit that will ensure many years of enjoyment participating in a sport that's loved.
