If I asked you what the primary transport in China is you'd be forgiven for replying The Bicycle". During my adolescence whenever China was mentioned in school we would see hoards of folk clogging the streets on their bicycle. Just like the food in China is nothing like Chinese food the transport system is no longer clogged up with bikes either.

The profit of China's advancing economy is generating enormous wealth and the price of a car is no longer outside the budget of the ordinary metropolitan citizen. Their demand for CO2 producing fuel has in a few short months deposed the USA and they are now the largest polluters on the planet.

As Al Gore's Live Earth comes to an end it's clear that many Americans are ready to shoulder the responsibility for much of the decline and are not only pledging money to the cause and taking steps to reduce their own pollution.

Growing up in Europe it was common knowledge we consumed less carbon based fuel per person than our US cousins. It was common belief that an American would prefer to get in his motor vehicle than walk the short distance to the closest shop. To generalise is often dangerous and I have to confess, at least in Europe, this does appear to have become general practice.

The growing health issues of this century include obesity and poor health through little exercise. It's ironic to hear Al Gore, a fairly good diplomat for the USA, telling us to leave our motor vehicle in favour of {{{our|a} bicycle. I never thought I would hear that.

Equally strange is to watch the change in China. As we are generalising; imagine the ordinary Chinese person in your mind, not local Chinese but the people you see on TV who live in China right now. Do you see someone unhealthy and fat or someone looking healthy and trim? Chances are the latter. As they throw away their bikes in favour of the family sedan is this likely to change?

For a long time I avoided riding my bicycle. The roads are for motor vehicles and it's just too dangerous to ride bikes on them (plus in the UK cyclists do not require insurance, don't pay road tax and there's no requirement to wear a safety helmet).

A growing number of special cycling paths have appeared in new cities that go directly from the suburbs into the heart of town. These can be used to save time and money as well as keep you healthy.

I keep a fold up bicycle in my car trunk I park outside of town. This not only saves money on parking meters but eliminates the hassle of finding a free parking place or returning to find a fine or wheel clamp too.

I prefer to find a Park and Ride. I take the bike in the bus, scoot around the city and then ride back or if it's wet use the bus to get back.

This is the only way that cycling is safe and if Europe, USA and with luck China want to abridge their pollution they're going to have to work hard to convince the community of the benefits.

America may not be at the forefront the fight against pollution but that doesn't mean the people don't take it seriously. Twenty years ago I visited Eugene Oregon and the local authorities had made it a bikers heavan. They spent money persuading people to leave their cars at home. Cycle paths were built and although motor vehicles were not actively penalized they were obviously mot encouraged and on a sunny Sunday afternoon there are more people on their bikes than in their motor cars.

If the weather bothers you or you live in a location where you would prefer not go out on a bike, get down to your local sports shop and try one of the many new stay in home fitness products. I have a silent Trojan Stamina in the spare room in front of the TV. Half an hour a day in the comfort of my own home and it cost less than $200, much less than the price of an ordinary bicycle.

Whatever aim to achieve, better health, better planet the noble cycle is a good option, not only do you improve your fitness, not only do you reduce your carbon footprint but you get somewhere for free too.
