Mountain bikes are specifically meant for uneven and rocky terrains. These extra grip and shock absorbing mountain bicycles are offered with fat knobby tires. Though, a full front and rear suspension has now become a common factor with bikes meant for mountain rides. Some bikes of this particular range are fitted with bar ends on the handlebars. Mountain bicycles are broadly graded into four different kinds based on their suspension. Bikes with dual or full suspension are bikes that have front suspension fork and rear suspension with a rear shock and linkage that makes the rear wheels move on pivots. Hard tail bikes have frames with no rear suspension and they are often supplied with front suspension forks. Soft tail bikes are bikes that have frames with a small amount of rear suspension. The bikes are triggered by the flex of the frame rather than the pivots. Fully rigid bikes are the bikes that have a sub-type of hard tail along with a rigid fork system

There are also different types of mountain bicycles. The cross-country variety has a small amount of suspension on the front or on the rear. These bicycles are reasonably lighter because they are constructed with lightweight materials both in the frame construction and in components. Some XC bikes of this particular type are without any suspension. They make use of a rigid front fork that assists in saving weight.

Free ride mountain bikes are very much similar to enduro bikes. These bikes rely more on weight and enhanced suspension, and they actually have a lot of suspension. They are mostly manufactured with heavier materials. Free ride bikes are absolutely versatile and they are fantastic for uphill travel. Trail bikes are trail specific bikes without any suspension. The contemporary trail bikes are manufactured without seats, as most of the time the rider is out of the saddle.
