Introducing... Judy Collins $12.79 Rhino's 21-cut Judy Collins collection is truly a solid introduction to the often misunderstood singer and, to a lesser extent, songwriter from the new folk era of the early '60s, whose career has yet to come to a complete end. Her great run was from the mid-'60s through to the early '80s, and while Frank Sinatra gets many accolades (and justly for his reading of Stephen Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns"), it's Collins' version that was her last big Top Ten smash hit, and rightfully so because it captured a different nuance. Hell, even Van Morrison started covering the tune after her version. But that's far from all: there's a reading here of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" that got the enigmatic songwriter discovered, and she covered Dylan, Henley, and Frey, and of course had her hit with Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" that made the melancholic folk-jazz tune a pop hit. Collins has one of those voices that was perhaps better suited to the American theater, but in the great age of rock and pop radio -- and on AM radio it was anything goes in those days -- she was a near constant presence. This selection proves exactly why and gives a solid overview of what her contributions were, and they were sizable. Judy Sucks a Lemon for Breakfast $12.78 Given Cornershop's extended seven-year layoff, it's not unreasonable to expect Judy Sucks a Lemon for Breakfast -- the group's first album since 2002's Handcream for a Generation -- to be somewhat of a reinvention for a group that specialized in ever-shifting change in the '90s. As it turns out, Judy finds Cornershop riding a very, very comfortable groove, replicating the sound of feel of the bright, boogying Handcream while stripping away any of its intensity. That means that this is the friendliest batch of neo-glam to come down the pike in quite some time, never catching fire but never really striking a match, either, and it's the least adventurous dose of eclecticism, too, with nary a sitar, Mellotron, or sample out of place. Familiarity may often breed contempt, but not here, because there's a palpable sense of happiness running through the music -- not something that's exuberant, but rather mellow and colorful. By now, Cornershop's blend of '60s pop, '70s rock, and '90s multi-culturism feels as retro as their inspirations, but that's only because the world has moved on to other fashions while the band has not. The Very Best of Judy Collins $9.98 Performers are known because of different qualities, like the ability to craft songs or sing with emotion. With folksingers like Judy Collins, there was never any question. In the '60s, her voice could always be counted on to amaze and astonish listeners. Collins also had the good taste to choose good songs by great writers like Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell. The only weak spot in this otherwise rosy scenario centered on occasional lapses in judgment when it came to arrangements. Early material like "Turn! Turn! Turn!" and "Suzanne" features little more than guitar and bass backup. These cuts still sound honest and fresh. Because Collins' vocals were so commanding, though, it was also easy to add busier arrangements to good effect. One of the best cuts on this album is Ian Tyson's "Someday Soon," featuring Buddy Emmons on pedal steel and James Burton on guitar. The band lays down a perfect country & western cushion for her emotive vocal and the results sound as lovely today as they did 30 years ago. For every song that she nails perfectly, however, there is another one that goes just as badly astray. The sluggish "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," complete with flute, sounds like a bizarre companion piece to "Suzanne." The harpsichord, rock drums, and orchestra of "Both Sides Now" seems a bit overblown -- though it certainly made a big splash on the radio at the time. Many of these songs misfire due to the odd mixtures of styles, attempting to marry folk and country to pop, and add out-of-place instruments. Oddly, the pop arrangement of "Send in the Clowns" works surprisingly well because it doesn't try to mix styles. The Very Best of Judy Collins is a good overview of Collins' journey from folksinger to singer/songwriter to pop diva. ~ Ronnie D.
