Wall and Room Decorations for Your Baby by Jessica Landry

I wonder if tiny newborns and toddlers remember how their rooms were decorated after they are all grown up? While I do not think they did, I wish they had. Rooms originally decorated for a baby will make a lasting and memorable impression on a preteen if they are put in that room, I know from experience. This is how my bedroom looked at the age of twelve, and all the way to when I was fifteen. Just a few months before my sixteenth birthday, we made the move at last. At that time During the year following 1963. If your parents were not willing to re-decorate your room it doesn't matter how much you beg, sulk, or though tantrums it will not happen, at least that was the way in my family.

The room was decorated for a small boy sometime around World War II, I had the privilege of living in this room for three long years and seven months. Just like hospital rooms, green paint was used. Alongside a single wall (I always imagined that is more than likely where the babies crib was located), the design of the peeling border was an old and faded locomotive motif. The train conductors cap had annoying French words on it that I knew by heart. I always thought of them during my French class, when I was in school. I put the desk in this corner of the room because of the room layout. (a desk is about the size of a babys crib). The wallpaper with the smiling conductor and brown train lasted far beyond my childhood into my young adult life. The uniform he wore was blue and striped and a red kerchief was tied around his throat. Do you think the little brat for whom the room was decorated remembers it as clearly as I do? Once again, I do not think so.

The window frames of the two large windows in the room were painted red - a horrible, orange-red that clashed with the sickly green walls. The curtains were matched with them. I will forever be grateful that those drapes were so worn out and faded that I didn't need to endure them for too long. Holding a stick I don't know the name of that toy,they were made of a red cotton fabric with a print design of little boy figures all wearing blue sailor suits and knee-high white socks and running behind some kind of wheel. The little boys were also all grinning as madly as the train-conductor, and I hope they made the baby boy in his crib smile or fall asleep right away or something. I actually felt like slapping them.

I came home one afternoon and the curtains were gone. Surprisingly they were thrown out by my mother. She had them replaced with curtains that weren't ripped or faded. If I remember correctly, they were made of fabric that was striped green and white. I remember the firsts set of curtains in the baby room better than I remember their replacements.

I did not spend time decorating my own kid's rooms during their childhood. I waited until they were old enough to tell me how they would like the room to look, which didn't work out too well either because my two sons shared a room. In fact, I did listen to their advice. The six year wanted bright red walls the colors of his favorite soccer club. Beside his bed was a very bright red wall. The eleven year old wanted an orange wall and posters of NBA players (Utah Jazz, I think). He received an orange-colored wall and poster pictures. White was the original color of the two walls that remain. My sons were pleased that they were not embarrassed when their friends came over, however I felt as if it were the worst room I had ever seen in my life.
